About a month ago I was hired by Matt, a US American who is every so often in Johannesburg, South Africa for business. He was advised by the company's hired security never to leave his hotel or office without their protection. Luckily for him, he decided to venture out and explore the city with me. We spent the day on a "photography tour" of Joburg & it's surrounds. Matt was able to see Joburg for the vibrant, contrasting, beautiful city that it is. Yes to his surprise, most of us live "normal" lives, we jog on the street, ride our bicycles, have breakfast at street-side cafes on weekends without fear of being mugged or attacked. Diagonal Street where this photo was taken, is in a part of the city that is always bustling.

We took a drive out to visit the Nanhua buddhist temple in June. It was a dry crisp winter's day. Even though the temple is located 50km east of Pretoria and only 70km North East of Johannesburg in Bronkhorstpruit, it feels like it is in the middle of nowhere when you're on your way there.

Last week Friday, the last day of July 2009, I had my first photoshoot with Natalie and David at their home in Johannesburg.
I have a lot to learn about photographing newborns and babies. It takes a lot of patience as you sure can't rush a baby :)
Thank you to Natalie for the opportunity. I enjoyed myself and could not stop clicking away. So many facial expressions and gestures from David.

This is a picture of my 84 year old grandmother's hand next to my own. Taken with my camera phone. My grandmother almost died 4 times last week. She is diabetic, usually in a lot of pain, her sugar levels fluctuate and at times she hallucinates as well as having severe memory loss. Somehow during her lucid moments she still retains a good sense of humor. She said that last week she went to heaven (or hell she is not certain) and they turned her away because they have no space and she is back with us again and won't be dying just yet.

This little guy is one of the kids at the Lambano Sanctuary children's home in Johannesburg, Gauteng where some of the BHP Billiton Manganese staff volunteered last month.

Lambano provides care and support for children impacted by HIV. They are currently caring for 25 children infected with the virus. In addition they are actively involved in helping families impacted by HIV in the Katlehong township. In the near future they will be opening a hospice to minister to sick and dying babies.

While in Kinsale, Ireland we came across a little fairground with a bumper cars ride. It took me straight back to when we were kids, trips to the beach in Durban, South Africa, braais (barbeque's), fairground rides, candy floss, toffee apples, pineapples on a stick dipped in chilli powder, being young and carefree. I convinced my cousins to go on the ride with me. It was 7 minutes of pure fun.

It was just a small piece of what is left of the wall but there was something very intense about seeing it in person and being in this city that has such an incredible and painful history.

It has been almost a year since I've been to Canary Wharf. This photo reminds me of when I worked at a company there for 3 months in 2006. I found the area to be in complete contrast to the rest of London with it's modern, glass, sky scraper buildings. It was always very windy there. I didn't enjoy being based there, though I did have a fantastic view of London from the 31st floor.

A photoshoot with Julius Reuben for a feature article about him in an online magazine 'Hot, Wild & Free'. The shoot was very unstructured, spontaneous and around Liverpool Street Station. Clothes were provided by designer Gavin Pierre Medford. It was my very first photoshoot with a model.

There is something about this shot that I love. The red standing out against a grey background. It was cloudy and cold that day at the relaunch of Southbank Centre in July 2007.
Artists in Residence Stan Won't Dance collaborated with designer Michael Pavelka, and an international collection of circus artists.
Southbank Centre's rooftops provided a futuristic urban backdrop where people ran up walls, skimmed across sharp edges and defied the laws of physics.

I couldn't take enough photos of the trees around Berlin. The colours of the leaves were just stunning. I enjoyed the east of berlin more than the west side. It was never a city I intended on visiting, but I am glad for my impulsive decision to go there. Read more about my trip here

No photoshop was used here, just adjusting of the exposure, contrasts, brightness settings. It was taken in an underpass walking from the S-bahn station towards the terminal of Berlin Schoenfeld airport. The airplane sign was on the wall ahead of the underpass. This is one of my favourites from my trip to Berlin.

We had been driving from Cork towards the Cliffs of Moher. It was grey and cloudy almost all the way there, but as were nearer to the coast, the clouds parted, the sun was shining, the sky was blue and the water was stunning. It was perfect. This was taken off the beaten path. Cool green grass, a light breeze. I truly loved the time spent at the Cliffs. It was the highlight of my Ireland trip.

I took this earlier this month while wandering around South Bank after a work. It had been raining for days prior to this. This was a good day to walk around. The Royal Festival Hall has recently opened after renovations and is a good place to chill out at to have coffee/drink and watch the sun set over the River Thames.

This has become one of my favourite places in London, hampstead heath. It is a good 10 minute walk from where I live, and I always enjoy walking through the grounds, sitting on a bench, having a picnic, taking photos, or just laying on the grass. The day this photo was taken, it was sunny but with a slight chill in the air. A glorious day.
